There aren’t many lakes that can off er a view of an unbroken horizon. Lake Vänern can. Its importance for Lidköping cannot be overstated. Having Sweden’s largest (and Europe’s third largest) lake as a next-door neighbour is actually the reason for the municipality’s existence. Fishing, shipping and trade have always enabled the people of Lidköping to make a living. Today, Lake Vänern is also animportant place for outdoor activities and for experiencing nature in a numberof diff erent ways. With over 22,000 islands, islets and skerries, Lake Vänern has an archipelago like no other lake in Europe. It’s little wonder that sport anglers, birdwatchers, canoeists, sailors and many others love this lake.
