What are the prospects for a mid-sized company in Lidköping with a limited local market to compete for customers in the big city? Göran Gustafsson, MD for the Strokirk-Landström’s printing plant provides an immediate answer. “It’s simple. We have to the best at being good.” Being successful requires an effi cient production process and a strong brand. “In our case, working proactively with the environment has contributed to both,” says Göran Gustafsson. Strokirk-Landström’s has worked actively with environmental issues since the mid-1990s. The company was Sweden’s fi rst environmentally certifi ed printing plant, working according to ISO 1400 directives and using FSC-approved paper, among many other things. ”Essentially, working with the environment is naturally a matter of taking responsibility for operations to avoid a negative impact on health and nature. But it has also given us some important competitive advantages,” explains Göran Gustafsson. On the one hand, costs have been reduced. By constantly monitoring and improving different processes, the company has reduced the need for raw materials, energy and transport. For example, there has been a 70% reduction in the use of solvents. On the other hand, enviromental work has generated new businesses. Many customers want to be certain that the printed matter that they purchase is produced in an environmentally certifi ed manner. ”I would really like to see that more people made even higher environmental demands in their procurements,” says Göran Gustafsson. “Everyone benefi ts from that.”
